The transformation of the 160,000 square foot B. Altman’s department store basement was spearheaded by a Georgetown Company principal who was the New York Public Library board chairman and head of its real estate committee. This creative re-use of space was completed in 1996 for $84 million with architect Gwathmey Siegel & Associates. The redevelopment provided open access to state-of-the-art information and technology resources in support of education, research and entrepreneurial initiatives.
